Quick Facts About Video Frame Extractor

Extract stills from supported videos locally. Capture at the playhead or sample a range at intervals. Save PNG, JPG or supported WebP images, individually or as ZIP.

Input
A supported local video with a browser-decodable video track.
Capture modes
One still at the playhead, interval sampling over a range, or interval sampling from the playhead.
Image formats
PNG, JPEG and WebP when the browser can encode WebP.
Image size
Original dimensions or a 1080, 720 or 480 px short side; downscale only.
Download and copy
Individual images or a ZIP; clipboard copies are PNG.
Frame count
A user-set limit, 100 by default; the estimate includes an aligned end timestamp.
Processing and limits
Decoded and encoded locally without video upload; batches depend on available memory and browser support.

Capture One Frame vs Extract Frames in Bulk

Use manual capture when you need a cover candidate or one still from a selected playback position. Play or scrub the preview, then capture the current image; each manual capture is added to your existing set. Use interval extraction for storyboards and visual indexes: choose the sampling interval, an optional start/end range and a maximum number of frames. You can also begin an interval sequence at the current playhead. The decoder chooses the source frame corresponding to each requested time, rather than creating a new image between frames. Repeated source frames are possible when your interval is shorter than the source frame duration.

How Many Frames Will an Interval Produce?

The tool estimates min(frame limit, floor((end − start) ÷ interval) + 1) requested samples, with a small floating-point tolerance. A 60-second range sampled every 5 seconds requests 13 timestamps: 0, 5, 10, …, 60, provided the limit is at least 13. The aligned endpoint is included; dividing 60 by 5 alone omits the initial sample. A timestamp is mapped to an available source frame, and unavailable samples are skipped, so the saved image count and timestamps may differ from this request count. More requested samples mean more decoding, image data and memory use; try a shorter range or a larger interval for a manageable batch.

How to Extract Frames from a Video

  1. Open your video file.
  2. Choose a mode — Even spread pulls frames at a set interval across the whole video or a selected range, while Pick by hand captures at the playhead.
  3. Select the image format and resolution, then download the set as a ZIP or single images, or copy a frame straight to the clipboard.

Two Ways to Grab Frames

  • Interval mode samples a range and stops at your chosen frame limit
  • Manual mode captures at the playhead; there are no frame-step controls
  • Continue interval sampling from the playhead
  • PNG, JPEG and WebP where the browser supports image encoding
  • Original dimensions or a 1080, 720 or 480-pixel short-side downscale
  • Individual downloads, ZIP archive or PNG clipboard copy
  • Estimated capture count before export; available frames can affect the result
  • Runs locally — your video is not uploaded

Supported Formats

Supported videos with decodable tracks, including many MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files. Images export as PNG, JPEG or browser-supported WebP. Resolution presets limit the shorter side to 1080, 720 or 480 pixels without upscaling.

Common Use Cases

  • Generate thumbnail and cover candidates for YouTube, TikTok or a blog post
  • Grab the exact key moment for a social-media post
  • Turn footage into a storyboard or shot list
  • Screenshot frames for documentation, bug reports and tutorials
  • Build a visual index of a long video or online course
  • Collect reference stills for design, illustration and study
  • Save a perfect still from a memorable clip

Privacy & Browser Processing

This tool runs entirely in your browser using WebCodecs. Your video is decoded, processed and re-encoded on your device — it is never uploaded to a server, and everything is released when you close the tab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I freely set the frame count and interval?

Yes. The sampling interval is set in seconds and supports decimals (0.5 means two frames per second), and both the frame limit and the sampling range are up to you - there is no fixed cap; extraction stops when the range ends or the limit is reached. More frames mean longer extraction times and higher memory usage; the page shows the estimated frame count in real time.

Which image formats are supported?

PNG, JPEG and WebP where the browser supports the requested canvas encoder. PNG avoids lossy image compression; JPEG and WebP can reduce size with different trade-offs. Check the actual exported format.

Can I customize the output size?

Choose the original dimensions or a preset that limits the shorter side to 1080, 720 or 480 pixels. Scaling keeps the aspect ratio and does not enlarge the source.

How long does extraction take?

Duration, dimensions, codec, requested count and your device determine the time. More frames also use more memory; try a smaller selection when processing fails.

How do I download the extracted frames?

Each frame can be downloaded individually, or you can download all of them at once as a ZIP file. You can also copy any frame to the clipboard and paste it directly into chats or documents (pasting always uses lossless PNG).

Will my video file be uploaded?

Your selected files are processed on your device and are not uploaded to TakeVid. The page and processing modules must load first; available browser codecs and memory still limit what can be processed.

Can I start extracting from a specific playback position?

Yes. In Pick by hand mode, play or scrub to a position and capture there, or start interval sampling from it. These are timestamp-based captures with no frame-step controls; available frames and boundaries can affect the result.
