Trim vs Split vs Crop

Use this video trimmer to keep one continuous section and remove the time before and after it. It does not divide a recording into several downloadable clips in one operation, and it does not change the visible area of the picture. To keep several separate highlights, make separate trims and combine them later if needed.

SplitDivide one video into multiple clipsNo multi-clip split export
CropChange the visible frame areaNo spatial crop control

What 0.1-Second Controls Mean for the Export

The handles and numeric fields choose start, end and duration in tenths of a second. The video itself consists of complete frames, so export aligns to the decoded frame covering the selected start and to frames starting before the selected end. That first frame becomes the beginning of the new clip. As a result, the downloaded duration can differ slightly from the time range shown in the controls. This is 0.1-second selection with frame-aligned export, not frame-by-frame editing or a guarantee of an exact duration. Review the exported boundaries when timing is critical.

Does Trimming Keep the Original Quality?

TakeVid decodes and re-encodes the selected video as H.264 rather than copying its original compressed packets. Export can therefore change quality and file size even when the picture dimensions are similar. The output uses even coded dimensions with a contain fit, and exported audio uses an available AAC configuration or an Opus fallback. Keep your source file for future edits and check the resulting picture and sound on the destination device. A short clip often uses fewer bytes because it contains less time, but this is not the same as a guaranteed compression ratio.

Trim Before the Next Editing Step

Choose the highlight first, then use Video to GIF for a short animation, Merge Videos for several prepared clips, or Video Compressor when the trimmed MP4 still exceeds a sharing limit. Removing unwanted minutes before a later conversion also reduces the amount of material that needs processing. The loop preview is useful for judging the content of the selection; inspect the completed MP4 for the final frame and audio boundaries.

How to Trim a Video

  1. Open the video you want to trim — a filmstrip of thumbnails appears below the preview.
  2. Set the clip duration, then slide the selection across the filmstrip, or drag its two handles to fine-tune the start and end to 0.1 s.
  3. Watch the loop preview of your selection, then export and download the trimmed MP4.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the trimmed video lose quality?

The selected video is re-encoded as H.264, so quality and file size can change. Audio uses an available AAC configuration or an Opus fallback. This is not a lossless packet-copy cut.

How precise is the trim? Can I cut to 0.1 seconds?

The controls use 0.1-second increments, while export uses complete source frames. The first frame can cover a time before the selected start, and the last retained frame has its full duration. Review the export when exact timing matters; it is not a guarantee of an exact requested duration.

How long can the selected clip be?

You can select up to the full source duration. Presets provide common lengths, but a long selection still needs enough browser memory and codec support to complete.

Which formats are supported, and what is the output?

Supported MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files need decodable video and audio. Output is H.264 MP4 with AAC audio where supported or an Opus fallback. Playback compatibility depends on the destination player.

Does the preview match the exported file?

The loop preview helps choose the content. The exported start and end align to complete video frames, so they can differ slightly from the selected times. Check the downloaded MP4 for final picture and sound boundaries.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

Your selected files are processed on your device and are not uploaded to TakeVid. The page and processing modules must load first; available browser codecs and memory still limit what can be processed.
