Flip Video vs Rotate Video

A flip reflects the image across an axis. Horizontal flip swaps left and right, making it useful for a mirrored selfie or webcam recording. Vertical flip swaps top and bottom. Rotation turns the whole image around its center and is a different operation. For example, turning an upside-down recording upright normally requires 180-degree rotation; a vertical flip alone leaves a left/right reflection. TakeVid offers one horizontal or vertical flip per export and does not offer rotation or a combined both-axes mode.

Does Flipping Re-encode the Video?

Yes. TakeVid redraws each decoded frame with the chosen reflection and re-encodes the picture as H.264 in an MP4 file. It is not a lossless stream-copy operation. The processing callback uses the source frame dimensions and timing without an intentional speed change. Audio follows compatibility handling: it can be copied when suitable for the MP4 output, otherwise it may be converted or may not be retained. Preview the exported file and check the picture and sound before using it.

How to Flip a Video

  1. Open a supported video.
  2. Choose horizontal or vertical reflection and compare the still previews.
  3. Export locally, then check the orientation and sound in the downloaded MP4.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between horizontal and vertical mirroring?

Horizontal reflection swaps left and right. Vertical reflection swaps top and bottom. A vertical flip is not a 180-degree rotation, because it does not also reverse left and right.

When would I need to mirror a video?

Four common cases: restoring mirrored selfie footage from a phone's front camera (text and logos back to normal); workout and dance follow-along videos (after mirroring, the instructor's left/right moves match the viewer); demonstration tutorials (e.g. instruments, hand gestures); and creative mirror effects for short-video platforms.

Will subtitles and text in the picture be flipped too?

Yes. The tool flips the entire picture, so any embedded text, watermarks, and channel logos are mirrored along with it - exactly what the "restore selfie" use case needs. If you want to flip only the person while keeping the text intact, you will need a professional editor for partial processing.

Will quality or the audio track be affected?

The video is re-encoded as H.264, so quality and file size can change. Compatible audio may be copied; other audio may need conversion or be omitted depending on browser support. Check the finished picture and sound.

Will my video file be uploaded?

Your selected files are processed on your device and are not uploaded to TakeVid. The page and processing modules must load first; available browser codecs and memory still limit what can be processed.
